What you give us

Nothing that identifies you, unless you type it into a message yourself. There is no account, no e-mail address, no phone number and no password. You choose a nickname when you enter a room; that is the only thing we ask for.

Messages

Messages are stored so that they stay visible in the room, together with the nickname and the time. A room keeps its latest fifty messages and resets after a day in which nobody was in it. If the moderator has set a timer, messages are deleted sooner.

When a room resets, a copy of its recent messages is kept for seven days where only the operator can see it, so that abuse reported afterwards can still be checked. After those seven days it is gone.

Private messages

A private message between two people passes through our server, because that is how it gets to the other browser. It is not stored: not in the room's history and not in the seven-day copy. It is not end-to-end encrypted either, so it is private from the others in the room, not a secure channel.

Your IP address

While you are connected, your IP address is used to apply the posting limits and to enforce bans. It is not saved with your messages. It is only stored if a moderator bans you from a room, and then only in that room, until the room resets.

The operator can read rooms

To be plain about it: the operator has an administration page that can show the messages in a room and the seven-day copies described above. It is there to deal with abuse reports and to keep the service running. If you need confidentiality from us too, HeyHeyChat is not the right tool.

Where it is stored

Rooms and messages are stored and delivered by Cloudflare. Cloudflare necessarily processes the technical details of your connection in doing so, and also provides the check at the door that keeps automated traffic out.

Your browser

The site keeps a few things in your own browser's storage: the nickname you last used, a random identifier so a room recognises you after a reconnect (which is how a moderator keeps that role), a token showing you passed the check at the door, and your choices for theme, sound and notifications. These never leave your device except to talk to the room you are in. You can clear them by clearing your browser's site data.

Visitor statistics

We use Clicky to count visits and see roughly where visitors come from: the page, the referring page, the country and the browser and device type. It is not loaded for visitors that identify as automated. We do not sell data and do not build advertising profiles.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete data about you at info@hertge.com. Since we do not know who you are, tell us which room and roughly when. If you think we handle your data badly, you can complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
